the magazine

i have been working pretty hard on the new issue. the projects section is finished, and i am starting on the music section.right now i'm waiting on the rest of the copy, as i only have about half of it so far...

next week we have another show opening. this one is a large group show with many artists that exhibited before as well as a few new ones. the magazine should also be going to press very soon...

days thirteen and fourteen

egad, could it be true? i'm actually starting on some design for the new magazine...this is good, since it needs to be finished by july 10. i'm designing the "projects" section, which is basically the section for random products, shows, events, etc. right now i'm working on creating an "aesthetic" for it, which is pretty open ended...i'll post images when i have them.

day eleven

well, last time i came in i brought some cake, and alas it had all been eaten by the time i returned.

so, brian bought me some cupcakes.

i've been working on re-designing the newsletter for the deep ellum residents association, my goal at this point is to come up with a basic format that can be re-created month-to-month. i'm supposed to nail down standard image sizes and word counts for the different sections.

i'll post a couple screenshots when i'm nigh finished.

days six, seven, eight, nine, and ten

yikes it's been a while since my last update...however, it has not chiefly been due to negligance, as much as an absolute void of information to discuss. the days since the opening have been calm and relxed, a pleasant recovery period following the craziness of that first week. i have spent my time packing boxes, filling orders, running errands, and starting to plan for the design of the next issue of art prostitute magazine.

however, yesterday i was given my first design task in while. i am supposed to come up with the structure of the deep ellum residents' association newsletter, which has a circulation of about 5000 copies in the area. at this point i am basically taking the old newsletter and laying it out in a new format, so that we can come up with a basic template for following newsletters.

that's the project for the weekend.

day five: opening

(saturday, june 3)

the kinsey opening was on saturday night.

it was a marvelous gala.

day four: frantic

(friday, june 2)

friday was the day of the private opening of kinsey's work, in which the high-rollers from dallas would show uup to view his work and hopefully buy. it's the first time that art prositute has had a private opening prior to the public opening, so it was a pretty big occasion. therefore, i showed up at about 10:30 per mark's request, and the place was already in a nervous fervor. my first task of the day was to take brian's car and go pick up kinsey at his hotel and relocate him to the place he would be staying for the next two nights; then i was to bring him to the gallery so that the show could be hung. once kinsey was at the gallery, i began creating gift bags that would be handed out to gallery guests. the bags would contain a set of pins (including the new one i designed), some postcards, some posters, etc. i also spent much of the afternoon preparing the frames for kinsey's drawings, which was nerve wracking since it involved a rather powerful drill with a large bit inches from precious artwork. after this task was done i started making the buttons, which is a laborious task, especially when your goal is 600 buttons for the night. i had several people helping during this portion, and this job was taken over by others when i had to jump on the computer and create some signage for the door that announced the show's sponsors. the show started at 6:00, and by 7:00 i was exhausted and ready to go home.

so that's what i did.

day three: lost

my day started with a call from brian, who asked me to drive to coppell to pick up an order that had been put in for three boxes of paper bags to the uline warehouse. it took me quite a long time to find the warehouse; i abandoned the directions after 20 minutes and started going down row after row of warehouses on the edge of coppell until i found the correct one. then i spent another half-hour trying to find my way back out. eek.

when i got the gallery, i was put to work creating a vinyl static-cling document that would advertise the sponsors of the kinsey show. this consisted mostly of tracing logos and trying to condense logos down to one color so that they could be printed in black on the static cling. during this time i was the only one in the studio, so i spent about half my time taking down phone messages and rsvps for friday's privated viewing of the show. i also finalized the design for the buttons advertising the wireless services in deep ellum. i originally came up with a few different ideas and color schemes:



but after consulting with the guys it was decided on that the final button should be this:



of course, this template also includes the border of the button that will be wrapped around the edges, so the final product won't have as much of a border.

i'll be interested to see them finished.

i guess i'll most likely be putting them together tomorrow.

day two: home depot

yesterday was day two at art pros. i picked up some gesso for kinsey on the way to the office/gallery, and when i got there my first task was to water the flowers out front. the next couple of hours was spent filling, packing, and labeling orders from the art prostitute online store, this was accomplished by myself and elda, a gallery intern. during this time dave was painting on the walls and the guys were preparing for installation, and so mark and i went to home depot for some last-minute supplies (a 24' ladder, a big trash can, some paint rollers, etc.) since dallas is a bit complicated to get around this took quite a while, and when we got back it was starting to get late in the afternoon. we starting surveying the best location to mount the 'art prostitute' sign outside the gallery, as it still is unmarked. however, during that time we were interrupted by a client who came in to see mark and brian. she is a representative of the deep ellum society, which is a group trying to promote community among those who live in deep ellum. they are launching a new program to make all of deep ellum wi-fi friendly, so they needed some promotional buttons to hand out at various community events promoting the service. so, i was given the job of creating the buttons. there are to be several different icons or phrases with the website www.deepweb.com on them. so, that is my first design project of the summer.

yay.

today i'll finish those up and hopefully get them printed and made by this evening.

day one: kinsey

today was my first official day back at art prostitute since last summer. however, this time the internship actually counts for academic credit, so that makes things a bit different. the new location in dallas is stellar, it's divided into a a gallery at the front and a work area at the back. the front is still being prepared for dave kinsey's show which opens on saturday, and the back is awash with hubbub concerning the new issue that is going into production next week as well as the advent of the public trust, the graphic design company that is officially being started by the guys at art pros.

i started out the day as a proper intern, by dividing a huge pile of trash into usuable packing materials and actual...trash.
however, the latter part of the afternoon was an experience not shared by many. dave kinsey flew into town today to prepare for the show, and it was my duty as the intern to be his personal driver as he had to scour dallas for art supplies and find his hotel room in the midst of seemingly a thousand dallas hotels.

luckily we didn't get lost.

it's a rare event for an intern to get to drive one of his favorite artists ever around town looking for india ink.


i am still in a bit of a daze. he asked me to pick him up some supplies on the way into dallas tomorrow.

we'll see what happens on day two.
